About

HI, I’m Latoya. However you got here, thank you and welcome. I am pursuing a MSc. in Global Affairs at Rutgers University. A native of Jamaica West Indies I have called New York home for many years. Hence the name Kingston Republic. I live for learning and travelling and I have always wanted to share that part of my life in a blog format. Check out my Travel & Lifestyle page for pictures and more about my wandering experiences. My educational background includes a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Science and Policy from Clark University, an undergraduate degree in Geography, with an environmental focus, from Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

I have a deep passion for Africa, urbanism, urbanisation, globalism, globalisation, the environment, energy poverty, and economic development in emerging markets.  For the past five years, I have been working with several non-profits focused on energy, education, and development in the US and abroad. Empower Energy is one of the non-profits I am affiliated with. We are currently working on a pilot project implementing Energy Education Curriculum using experiential learning approach in one Jersey City high school. I  also serve on several Board of Directors. The treasurer to INDESEEM,  a non-profit focused on  “Enhancing partnerships for development.” I am also the Vice President of Friends of Ninos de Guatemala(FNDG). FNDG is a New York-based nonprofit which fundraises for Ninos de Guatemala (NDG). NDG is a Dutch-Guatemalan nonprofit working to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala by providing quality primary school education to those who need it most.

A geographer at heart, I am always ready to explore new places and spaces with one question in mind; why?
